Dull Brown and Indigo Rays: More on People Emanating Colors

I posted on August 19th about the idea of people emanating colors, which appears in Chapter 5 of Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki in the story told by one of the characters, called Midorikawa.  But I ran across this theme again last week when reading a vintage mystery by Margery Allingham.  Given Murakami's liking for mysteries and the fact that he was inspired by the American hard-boiled genre when writing his early novels and some short stories, I thought I would post the relevant passage here -- just for fun.

'No,' he said. 'Inspector Oath is not particularly interested in Lisa.'
'Of course he's not,' said Donna Beatrice. 'He's not interested in anyone, I hope. It's perfectly obvious that poor misguided Dacre committed suicide. I told the Inspector there were angry dull brown and indigo rays round the boy's head last night. Read what all the authorities say about dull brown and indigo rays. I don't supposed even the Inspector is going to question the authority of men like Kunst and Higgins. Dull brown and indigo rays mean violence, depression, and a lowering of the cosmic tone. A perfectly simple case of suicide. After all, that's the only charitable way to look at it.'
'You saw the rays? said Max, fixing her with a dark unwavering eye. 'Are you prepared to swear in court that you actually saw colored rays of light encircling young Dacre's head any time in your life?'
Donna Beatrice's gaze wavered for an instant, but not for long.
'Yes,' she said exasperatingly. 'I can see rays round all your heads now. There are too many dark colors in your own aura, Max.'

From Margery Allingham, Death of a Ghost (London: Heinemann, 1934), pp. 58-59.

Serbian and Italian Covers, Hebrew, Lithuanian, Slovak and Slovene Translation Rights

A Serbian and Italian covers of Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki appeared on the website of Curtis Brown Agency, the agent representing Murakami in Europe.  The Serbian publisher is Geopoetika and the book will released in December in Nataša Tomić's translation (one of the very few announcements so far that include translator's name!). The Italian translation (which for some reason used the reading "Tasaki," instead of "Tazaki," in the title) will be translated by Antonietta Pastore and published by Einaudi Editore in March 2014 according to "well-informed sources"  (http://www.bibliotecagiapponese.it/2013/11/27/murakami-e-lincolore-tsukuru-tasaki-e-il-suo-anno-di-pellegrinaggio/).

Also, Hebrew (Kinneret), Slovak (Slovart Spol), Lithuanian (Baltos Lankos) and Slovene (Mladinska Knjiga) have joined the list of languages and publishers who are foreign translation rights holders.

The English Translation of Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki Out Next Fall?

The Publishers Weekly posted an article on international bestsellers in 2013. Apparently Tsukuru Tazaki is at the top of the Spanish list. The article mentions that the English translation of the novel will be released by Knopf in the fall of 2014. This is the first mention of the English translation's release date more concrete than "2014."

International Bestsellers: November 2013: New Titles Rule The Lists

Newcomers to the international bestseller lists locked down the top spots in several markets in October. Haruki Murakami’s much anticipated novel Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, the author’s first since 1Q84, hit #1 on Spain’s fiction list (Knopf will publish a translation in the U.S. in fall 2014). Anna Gavalda led the French list with her new novel Billie, which tells the story of a man and a woman who try to hit the restart button on their relationship.
